Install paclink-unix
- Configure a single MTA
This is an old revision of the document!
This wiki describes a basic Debian install of paclink-unix that will work with most e-mail clients. If you are installing paclink-unix on a machine with no keyboard or display then you will use a command line mail client like mutt. If the install is to a 'regular' linux box with keyboard & screen I'm going to assume you are using Thunderbird email client or something that allows configuring a Unix movemail account.
While I have installed & config'ed sendmail, the package, I think it is easier to config postfix for the MTA. There is usually some confusion over sendmail. There is sendmail the package & sendmail the program which can be found in any of these Debian packages:
nbsmtp , smail, nullmailer, exim4-daemon-heavy, masqmail, courier-mta, msmtp-mta , esmtp-run, ssmtp, sendmail-bin, xmail, postfix, exim4-daemon-light.
Background on the default MTA debate for Debian can be found here
For some background info on how e-mail works I found this link helpful: A short introduction to the notorious MxA bunch.
